Based in Tokyo
The ONA crews were temporarily based in Japan for the
Vietnam round trip flights out of Tokyo.
Flights could i e originate from McGuire NJ with a
brief layover / change of crews at Anchorage Alaska.
The incoming crews would have a layover in Tokyo,
as the Japan stationed crews took over shuttling
from i e Tachikawa AFB outside Tokyo to Vietnamese
destinations. This was a civil operation performed
during full war and the support from the supplemental
aviation such as ONA, was of course mandatory.
The troops flew in as boys with comic books and came
back out as somber men. One evening we were departing
Bien Hoa Air Base north of Saigon, when we were told
that we would have to hold our Take-Off, till they got
in contact with our artillery. They needed to have
them cease fire, till we could get airborne, as they
were shooting across our departure route.
I have misplaced my logbook that covered this time
period, so I don’t have any exact dates or crew
information on these flights.
